How to make a type specimen

Three simple steps — all on your device.

  1. 1

    Upload your font

Drop in a .ttf, .otf or .woff file — or select every weight at once to build a whole family sheet. Nothing is uploaded; the file is read in your browser.

  2. 2

    Preview and set the details

Type your own sample text, change the preview size, and give the specimen a title and subtitle.

  3. 3

    Download the PDF

Every sample is typeset in your actual font, embedded in the PDF, so the text stays selectable and the proof is of the real file.

Why use Font Specimen Generator on PDF for Joy

Reads the font, not a guess

Family and style names, designer, foundry, version, licence, glyph count and OpenType feature tags all come from the font file itself.

Weight and size ladders

Upload several weights and they are sorted by width, weight and italic, then shown as a ladder — plus a size ladder from 60pt down to 8pt.

Full character set

Every character the font covers, grouped into uppercase, lowercase, figures, punctuation, symbols, currency, maths, fractions and accented Latin.

100% private, on-device

Your files are processed entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded to or stored on our servers, so sensitive documents stay yours.

A type specimen for any font you own

A specimen is how a typeface is judged: the weight ladder shows the range, the size ladder shows where it stops working, and the character set shows what you can actually set with it. Foundries publish beautiful ones, but if you have licensed a font — or drawn your own — there is rarely an easy way to produce the same thing for your own library or brand guidelines.

This tool builds one automatically. It parses the font file, pulls out the metadata, and lays out a multi-page PDF with the font embedded, so every sample is genuine, selectable text rather than an image. Because it all runs in your browser, you can safely use it on unreleased or commercially licensed fonts — the file is never uploaded.

Private by design. Every file stays on your device — nothing is uploaded to or stored on our servers.

Frequently asked questions

Which font formats are supported?

TrueType (.ttf), OpenType (.otf) and web fonts (.woff and .woff2). Font collections (.ttc) are read as their first font.

Is my font uploaded anywhere?

No. The font is parsed and the PDF is built entirely in your browser — the file never leaves your device, which matters if the font is licensed or unreleased.

Can I make a specimen for a whole family?

Yes. Select every weight at once, or add them one at a time. They are sorted by width, weight and italic and shown as a single ladder.

Is the text in the PDF real text?

Yes. The font is embedded and every sample is typeset with it, so the text stays selectable, searchable and sharp at any zoom.

Can I use this for a font I bought?

Reading a font you have licensed to produce a specimen for your own reference is normally fine, and nothing is redistributed — but check your licence, and don't share the PDF as a way of passing the font on.

Is it really free?

Yes. The core tools are completely free with no signup, no watermark and no daily limits.
